# From claim to payment

Between submitting a claim and the money reaching an account there are four stations.
Each has its own status on screen — know which station the money is at and you never
have to ask.

## Station one: submit

On **Claims**, press **Submit claim**: give it a title, pick a category, enter the amount, attach
the receipt, add a reason. Once submitted the claim is Pending, and the
first approver your organization's approval rules name is notified.

When the Payroll module is on and the catalogue has items, a **commission** claim can also carry a
**Commission item** from the catalogue and its **Quantity**. Once you have entered an amount, **Commission guidance** appears under the item:
your **Claimed amount**, the **Guidance amount (catalogue)** (quantity × unit commission) and the
**Difference** between them — for your reference only; nothing checks it or blocks the
submission. The catalogue itself is maintained by admins on Company ▸ Settings ▸ **Payroll**
(under Policy in the settings list), in its **Commission catalogue** section (name, code, unit commission amount).

A claim you submitted that is still Pending can be cancelled from its
detail page: press **Cancel claim**, then press it again once the confirmation appears. The claim
becomes Cancelled, and nothing reaches payroll. A commission claim the
system files when a procedure task is completed follows the rules on [Tasks](/en/docs/tasks/).

## Station two: approval

The claim follows your organization's approval rules and is approved by whoever they name — by
default your direct manager, and some rules add a further step. The claim detail page's
**Approval chain** shows which step it has reached and who it is waiting on.

## Station three: the pool

The moment the last approver approves and the claim becomes Approved, it
enters [the pool](/en/docs/payroll/pool/) as an adjustment, with no second approval needed in
payroll — you'll see it in the "Waiting for the next run" strip on the **Pay** screen. No money has moved
yet: it is queued until a [run](/en/docs/payroll/run/) of a CLAIMS stream that takes its category,
for a period ending on or after the day it was approved, collects it; a SALARY stream's run never
collects from the pool.

## Station four: the payslip

Once that run collects the row into its period, it appears among the earnings on that period's
[payslip](/en/docs/payroll/payslip/). The claim detail page's **Payment status** is the truthful
progress bar:

| Payment status | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **Approved — not yet paid** | The claim is approved, but the payment carrying it has not been marked paid yet — it may still be in the pool, or already in a period. |
| **Paid** | The payment carrying it has been marked paid; on the **Pay** screen you see that period as Paid. |

> **Why "approved" is not "paid"**
>
> "Approved" only means the claim itself stands. The money travels with a pay period —
> which period collects it, and when that period pays, decide when it lands. That is why
> the claim page gives Payment status its own strip: it answers a different question.
