# Announcements

## The reading side

**Announcements** is your notice board, newest first. You see the org-wide notices, plus
those of your branch and of the branches you cover — or, if you post org-wide or hold
**Moderate messages**, every branch's. Once the feed has loaded, every announcement you can
see is marked read at once.

An announcement that requires acknowledgement carries an **Acknowledge** button; once you
press it, it turns into **Acknowledged**. Same idea as a task's **Got it**: it is a record
that you read and agreed — not a notification to swat away.

## The posting side

**Company ▸ Announcements** is the publisher's desk:

- **Post an announcement** — a **Title** and a **Body**, the **Location** (the audience), and
the **Require acknowledgement** switch. Your permission decides the locations offered:
branch-level posting offers only your branch and the branches you cover; org-wide posting
adds **Entire organization**, and every branch.
- **Edit** — author only, and only **until the first acknowledgement lands**. The
reason is worth remembering: an acknowledgement records *the exact text someone
agreed to* — if the text could move afterwards, the acknowledgement would mean
nothing. So title and body are editable (at zero acks), and the audience and the
  ack requirement are **never** editable.
- **Retract** — the author or anyone holding **Moderate messages** can retract, in two
clicks: **Retract**, then **Confirm retract**. Which is why an acknowledged item shows
  Retract but not Edit.
- Clicking a notice's title in the table opens its panel: the body, the author's **Edit**,
and, on an ack-required notice, the **Who has acknowledged** list — where the author sees
who acknowledged and when. The table's **Acknowledged** column is only the count.

> **Announcement, chat, or forum?**
>
> Discussion that can flow away belongs in [chat](/en/docs/messaging/); discussion that
> must stay findable, on the forum; **something everyone must read — ideally with a
> record that they did** — is an announcement. Same system underneath; the choice is
> how long the words need to live.
